200+ Dog Breeds and Their Names in English

Choosing the right dog breed can be challenging, but not impossible; many factors need to be considered. To help, we have explained a complete list of the most popular dog breeds in Australia. You can also use a Breed Selector tool to match your needs. The American Kennel Club releases its ranking of the most popular dog breeds in the United States based on the previous year’s registration statistics. Dogs are beloved family members, and people often have strong preferences for certain breeds.

In this article, you can see pictures, learn about each breed’s history, temperament, and common health conditions. This information will help you and teach you to find the best dog that fits your family and lifestyle.

The list includes only purebred dogs, so hybrid or “designer” breeds are not counted. From small breeds like the Chihuahua to larger ones like the German Shepherd, all are included in this article. The rankings highlight many favourite dogs and sometimes bring surprises that will change your thoughts about breed selection.

What is a Dog Breed?

People have been breeding dogs since prehistoric times, using their skills to train them, but they originally used wolves to develop domestic dogs for tasks such as hunting, guarding, and herding. Over thousands of years, dogs were bred for specific physical and behavioural traits so that they can survive in the environment, leading to the creation of distinct breeds like the Greyhound and Mastiff.

A dog breed is defined by its ability to “breed true,” meaning two purebred dogs such as the Irish Setter, produce puppies with the same recognisable traits. Each breed follows a written breed standard describing its ideal appearance and temperament. These standards are created by breed clubs and approved by the American Kennel Club, which currently recognises about 200 breeds out of more than 340 dog breeds worldwide
